What a coincidence! Just browsing and saw this thread.
I have been given an Aloe Vera plant and already it appears to be a bit top heavy.
Thanks Edd and Verdun for the detailed advice
. Will investigate the roots (as step 3 above) but wait as suggested. Need a new pot and Perlite anyway.
Bizzie - what an odd coincidence I was planning on exactly the same thing today for a top heavy survivor of 8 years in a bachelor pad aloe that's squeezed into a tiny pot (and loving it it seems!) Mine is very unstable and with impending dog appearing will it do any harm to pot it now than risk it getting accidentally knocked if lept at?
Cheer Verdun.
I could try and find somewhere well out of the way but since German Shepherds are by their nature not tiny and more than capable of opening doors I think I'd struggle to find anywhere that'd give the plant any light I don't want to kill it off its a lovely plant (although not as lovely as my engagement aloes a member on the forum sent me). It's currently on the windowsill with a heater beneath it. Is the reason for not repotting it in winter due to it being in hibernation or some such? How does that work for a house plant; I've never thought before!
I have repotted a few aloes and their pups. Last year I did 10 and they are all doing amazingly well
i use a mix of normal compost, sharp sand and grit. They love it and are thriving on the kitchen windowsill at the moment
i have a huge on that resides in my hallway during the winter and this one has had a mad growth spurt too, I reckon it's gained about 6 inches in height since I brought it into the house. This really is not an exaggeration!
Hi Edd, thanks for the really needed advice, hope to pot it on soon then, and it's family all a bit sqaushed in, Connie ( will bookmark advice lol)
Clari
great minds and all that but I haven't done it yet. Family w/end and now its ...now
Fruitcake I'm encouraged that they will take with normal compost. Will have use perlite as cant get grit easily, and I keep it on my kitchen window sill too! there with the sleeve orchid, mint, basil, parsley, spider plant rootings...
This is her after potting. Nice wide (not terribly deep) pot to give those roots chance to spread out?
