Grow your own bird food.

Can I use any plant seeds from any plants and mix them for bird food ?

lol, I think some seed might be harmful...such as Digitalis or Lupins? I know birds taste differently to us (yummy slugs) but I would assume poisonous plants go across the board?

    I could be wrong...

If you grow the right plants just leave the seedheads on and the birds will help themselves through the winter.  Even in the centre of a busy town my daughter's garden is full of goldfinches throughout the year because they love the seeds of the Nigella that grows in her garden.

  • The dandelions grow up between the flags on my terrace. I weed them out when I have time (I won't use weedkillers)but last year I didn't and they all flowered and then seeded. The goldfinches came every day and ate the seeds, working methodically flag by flag and leaving little piles of tiny white seed stalks. I spent ages watching them from the kitchen window. Good luck with collecting those seeds then!
