a local tree surgeon brings me his tree chippings for which he has no buyer and i mix it with grass clippings ( we have around 8 acres)to make wonderful compost. I reckon I've made around 20 odd tons of compost this year.
Hosta, does your tree surgeon come from St Giles by any chance?
That is an amazing property for the money, you got a real bargain there. I too am very jealous!
As the conifer is near too the house, I would also advise using a tree surgeon, it's much safer and well worth the money. They will leave you the chippings, i did a similar thing 2 or 3 years ago, still got some of the chippings even now.
We use a Bosch chipper for the smaller bits, works very well, no complaints, bought from Amazon. This one
We have a Woodsman 10. It is a chipper and shredder which takes branches up to almost 3 inches but also deals with leaves and and the usual garden cuttings. It is not for the fainthearted, being heavy to move round the garden and noisy but it does a brilliant job and does not jam up. Although heavy, you can take it to the place you want to work or to your heap, which saves an awful lot of carting stuff about.
I have a Bosch shredder too and couldn't function without it. I asked for and got it for Christmas about 12 years ago, my best present ever.
This last autumn we cut down a tall conifer, a huge thicket of dogwood and three multi-stemmed trees, 2 pussy willows and an ash. (Not all on the same day!) The pile of branches was enormous but the shredder had it under control in a couple of hours. I keep the bigger branches for logs for the woodburner, use the chippings for paths or mulches or just add to the compost heap.

Thanks all for your response it's really much appreciated. Posy can you recommend a particular chipper?

Lyn, sorry, missed your post. No not from St Giles. BTW. I'll get your seeds in the post this week.
