in Talkback
I absolutely love mixing tropical plants like bananas in my tradition english garden- but of course we are all on a budget so i need help to grow one from seed!
Should i start growing it now ready for summer indoors? and how should i germinate the seed?

Do you know what type of banana? Ensete are easier to germinate than other Musa.
First of all wash the seeds with hot water and a nail brush. They are covered with hormones that prohibit germination. Soak afterwards in warm water for 24 hours.
Easiest method is to get a ziplock sandwich bag, add the seeds, cover with compost and perlite, dampen soil and seal. Place on top of a heating boiler - you want the temperature difference of hot and cool. Failing that a hot water cupboard during the night and room temp during the day. After a few weeks/months, you should see them starting to germinate.
thanks very much! will give it a try.
