Strawberry variety for kids to grow
I'm planning a small raised bed for my kids (6 and 4 years old) to grow strawberries in - their favorite fruit in the garden. The fruit will be eaten straight from the plant so the most important will be sweet flavour without any consideration for the longevity in storage. Do you grow your own strawberries in the garden, what variety would you recommend? There are so many of them on the market, and all apparently very sweet (but only according to sellers)

Hi i wouldn't mind some more strawberry variety myself. I have at the moment Pegasus nice flavour - good size - resistant to disease. And I scoff as many as I can straight off the plant
I grow 'Buddy' an ever bearer and 'Honeoye' an everbearer and and early fruiter which crop throughout the season, all the strawberries these day's are bred for for flavour, you can buy selections which give you a longer fruiting period, a lot are on offer now as bare root plants, you'll get a larger crop with a selection of plants, sometimes a glut if the weather is right. Everyone has their favourites, you'll get plenty of suggestions, but as the kids are so young, if my son was anything to go by, he just got under the netting and stuffed his face, they won't care that much.
Thank you for replies,
Younger one is not bothered and will eat even not fully ripen strawberries, but older one is the fussy one. Last year each of them was tending to his own big pot with couple of plants, had to water and feed regularly etc, I was helping younger,as older was happy to do everything himself. The weather was beautiful so plants and the garden didn't mind regular soaking, only water in the rainwater butt finished quickly and the kids started carrying water from the kitchen through the entire house. Both enjoyed all that fuss very much, but the harvest was tiny, so I thought I will get some more plants this year.
