I cut anything that flowers in the garden. Whatever is in flower at the time and it all looks good, perennials, bedding, bulbs, tuberous stuff. My wife loves it, Even if they only last a few days, you can always pick more, and as with 99% of plants, regular picking induces more flowers. Your'e only limited by the amount you can grow in the space you have.

  • Hi Hawk and Rose

As an ex flower shop owner I really miss having fresh flowers around the house at all times of the year and hate cutting them from my garden.  So like you I am hoping to grow them in an allotment.  I have found the tips Sarah Raven gives for doing this invaluable.  Have a look on YouTube.  She has many videos on the subject and many show her standing in amongst the end result.  Personally if I just had to choose one flower it would have to be the sweet pea.  Beautiful to look at and even more importantly smells delicious.

Let us know how you get on and what you finally decide to do  and I will do the same.

  • Rozberry what was the flowers you liked most in the shop?

Rudbeckias in a vase seem to last for weeksimage

  • Planting up loads of bulbs this weekend hopefully, others have to wait, we have gladioli, dahlias, lilies, lily of the valley and a peony so far, going to garden centre on weekend to see if we can get any more. So hopefully will get even more.

definitely going to look up Sarah raven on YouTube to check, didn't think about that. Thank you. There is one small white flower that our local florist has constantly just can't remember them, might pop in and just buy some so I'll remember!

For foliage suggest Bells of Ireland, Fennel, Euphorbia Oblongata. And you can never have too many dahlias.

  • Hi garden girl

I liked sooooo many flowers....... Lilies have always been areal favourite mainly for the perfume.  At this time of year the spring flowers are divine.  Love tulips in hand tied bunches mixed with lots of twiggy bits and tied with natural raffia....then hyacinths, ranunculus, tuba rose, muscari, anemones and not forgetting good old daffodils the bigger the bunch the better!  For more inspiration have a look at Claire Cowlings work.  She is mainly a wedding florist but has produced some really yummy handtieds featuring beautiful spring flowers.  Have a look..
