Read with interest all your comments. Jane a - although your area was very small I was encouraged to read your planting mix. The native American Indians always used to grow what they called the Three Sisters in the same bed, i.e. Sweetcorn, climbing beans (up sweetcorn stems) and squash or courgette underneath to keep roots shaded and therefore more moist. I have been growing this way for years and even with the extremely dry summer I have had in Herefordshire my sweetcorn has been superb.
I've grown corn for the first time ever in the greenhouse I have 7 huge cobs but no sign of ripening. Glad I read this I was going to try ripening them on the windowsill
