Coarse Sand!

I want to buy some coarse sand for my lavender and rosemary plants but I don't want to get a massive builder's bag- can anyone suggest something smaller and easier on the purse too?

Morning BK, BoB TG put me onto builders sharp sand he uses and its proved a good cheap alternative to G/C sand at around twice the price and just as good, always a bag in the g/h now good luck,by the way stores usually keep the sand outside, gloves and a rag required, warmer but a bit dull erein Munsly N Norfolk folks Avagoodenimageimage

I use bags of horticultural grit for such purposes.

Most g/c's sell them in 10kg or 25kg bags

Builders sand can contain a lot of salt and other things plants do not need, hence horticulture sand exists. I would buy cheap grit/chippings for drainage. If you have clay soil, adding sand can actually worsen drainage around roots.

I only used sharp sand once many, many yrs ago when I was trying to break up the clay soil to prep a veg bed.
I think it made the whole thing worse.

I've since learnt that organic matter and h/grit is the answer to drainage problems generally.

PS NEVER use builders sand in the garden esp with clay - it 'sets'
