Help - what animals are in my peace lily?

Hello all

I'm a complete novice when it comes to plants but have discovered some kind of animal making a home in my peace lily. Does anyone know what these are and how I can get rid of them?

The first picture is the tub I keep my peace lily in with little white specks in it. The bottom picture is as close up a zoom as I can get without going too fuzzy. A google has led us to a few different animals like springtails or mealybugs but neither seem exactly right.

They don't seem to actually be harming the plant but they come back time and time again despite a re-pot roughly every year. I'm very fond of my peace lily - it's been with me since 2007 and is my only plant - so I'd hate the thought that something's eating away at it!

Any help or advice would be great please...!

Thanks

JP

  • More googling suggests they could be whitefly, however we've never actually seen them fly and they only seem to live on the plant's soil rather than the leaves...

  • They are the coverings from the seeds which fall from the flowers so nothing to worry about at all.  The actuals seeds are black in colour.  See this photo:

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
