Euonymus europaeus

Peanuts3Peanuts3 Posts: 759

I'm looking at planting some Euonymus europaeus (spindle) in one of my hedgerows to break up the snowberry a bit.

Is anyone able to tell me if it has thorns, I have a major dislike to plants with thorns, but am struggling to find any info on it.  I've got a feeling that it does..

Any advice gratefully received.  thank you.

Oh sorry, another question, if I'm to buy 2L plants (all can afford) and going to plant them in an already established hedgerow, that is full of snowberry and rhododendrons, with laurel and viburnum further down.

How do I plant new shrubs in that environment so they have a fighting chance and don't get smothered by other plants ?

thank you in advance for any help.

Laurel and rhodies are will swamp anything. You could buy small and grow on in a pot or a spare bit of ground  for a season. I've done that many times, I can't afford the big stuff either.

But I would buy bare root

curious mixture of binomial and common names on this site. Spindle is the euonymus

    great, thank you x

  • mine arrived in the garden by chance - where the birds perch waiting for the bird table.  I wonder if they might grow quiite easily from seed? preferably fresh seed gleaned from a friend's garden....cheaper than plants and probably at least as good a chance of succeeding.  I'll have a look and see if there is anything ressembling seed left on it...but don't hold your breath.

They do grow easily from fresh seed left outside over winter gg. I think mine have dumped all their seed now, or the birds have taken it
