Echium pininana x wildpretii

Hi,

I started these off last spring, I know they're not completely hardy but I wasn't sure whether to expect them to die back over winter or not...

As it happens the lower and ends of the leaves have turned black although the middles are still green. 

Does anyone know if this is normal and they'll regrow next year or is it a sign they won't make it?
