Dying Eleagnus!

Hi

Just wondering what you think might be the problem.  This large shrub, it is the kind with yellow varigation, sorry I dont know the variety.  Seemed to be growing well then in about October some of the leaves started withering, now most of the plant is dying.  Threre is some coral fungus and also a dark brown fungus growning on an old cut back branch. Do you think the fungus is the problem or is the fungus there because the wood is dead?

Thanks for your help

I've had dying back problems with these eleagnus, even the non variegated version. I cut one back to stumps and it regrew, so far so good. You need to watch it even harder for reversion to green after that.

I would doubt Vine weevil or any bug but have no better suggestion

  • The poor thing is definitely on its way out!  I'm already thinking of alternatives!   There are lots of vine weevils in my garden there are signs of adults eating the leaves of other plants but I hadn't thought about the grubs eating the roots of this shrub. I will need to investigate further.

    Thanks for your help.
