Planting dahlia tubers early

Hello,

I just bought a small/mini greenhouse (2 x 1.5 x 2.5 m, L x W X H)  with plans to plant several dahlia tubers into small pots to kick-start the planting season much earlier than usual. I was informed that doing this will encourage a more vigorous bloom (and longer season of blooming) of flowers when I re-pot/replant them in spring time.

If this is true, when is the earliest time to start planting the dahlia tubers to store them in the mini greenhouse? Is January too early?

Cheers

I start mine mid March indoors, here is a very good informative site, this is exactly what I do. If you follow this you will have a wonderful show right through till Autumn.Dead heading is very important to keep the flowers coming. I always pick off the first buds to enable the plant to put all energy into growing first.

Me too Verdun, but not quite so early as yours, you are probably 2c warmer than here. Its more of a cold wind here and damp, most days in the clouds.

To add to the excellent advice given above, I'd also suggest the young plants will be subjected to frost if you plant  in January, so unless you plan to have heating in your greenhouse, I'd hang fire until March.
