I particularly like quite spicy, heady scents so I would consider pinks (perennial), various stocks (the 8 week ones can be sown at intervals to give a succession) and nicotiana.

These should all be ok in large pots & the pinks can be planted in your new borders when they are ready.

It is also worth looking at different seed companies & searching for fragant mixes.

Let's not forget jasmine, and there's also a viburnum that produces its flowers in the shape of a ball, its not 'the bride' its a different one (I don't know its name). I have it in my garden and in the evening its a really nice perfume wafting into the lounge in late spring/early summer.

  • Primroses, Violets, Sweet William, Sweet Sultan.Lliy of the Valley.

Your choice will depend on your soil and aspect.

Lily of theValley like a shady, damp site. Carnations and pinks like a limey, poor, gritty, sunny site.

Read what it says on the back of the packets of annual seeds  for sowing and flowering times  so that you can sow a rotation of varities to take you right through the summer.
