Lavender cuttings

My 2 ornamental lavender trees look dead or dying but some branches still look ok. Am I able to take cuttings from the healthier branches?

Nothing venture, nothing gain, though I've never done it in the middle of winter! You'll just waste some potting compost if it doesn't work, but it can be put on a flower bed.

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
  • Myself I would wait until spring, then cut out or trim the dead branches. When new growth appears take cuttings and dip in some rooting compound place in a small pot and away you go. As Busy-Lizzie says you could try your luck this time of year.

  • I got loads of self sown seedlings from my Munstead plants, so will be potting on and renewing from them for free.

I take lavender cuttings in the summer, pick a stem that is not flowering, pop it into some cutting compost - they are nearly as easy as fuchsia cuttings, if I can do it anyone can image

There is a simple to follow write up here:

  • Thank you all so much! I will wait till spring as suggested as one of the trees is fairly healthy so I hope it will struggle through. Thanks

  • Happy New Year and may you have loads of colour in your garden in 2015image.
