Is it in full, partial or dappled shade? I have a golden Philadelphus in total shade. These shrubs will be OK with some shade - Hypericum Calycinum, Hydrangeas, Pyracantha, Fuschia Ricartonii, Abelia Grandiflora. There is more choice, I think of spring flowering shrubs.
It's always a good idea to study what does well in neighbouring gardens with similar conditions. Most plants can put up with some shade, and are you limiting yourself to shrubs or are you going to grow herbaceous perennials (die back each winter and pop up again in spring).
Your local garden centres may have a section for shade lovers too, so you can do your research there. Have a look in their books section while you are there. It's always useful to have your own reference books.
Choisya goes well in shade for me
In the sticks near Peterborough
any hardy fuchsia morning sun ,afternoon shade
Take a look at plantsforshade.co.uk I have used them quite a lot and they have a good selection, reasonable costs and deliver in good condition.
Thank you so much everyone for all your great suggestions which are really appreciated
