Daffs not even poking through yet here, but I'm in a bit of a frost pocket and it did hit -3.5C recently which would have put the mockers on any ideas they had of coming up early! Plenty of crocus showing although none in flower so far. On the plus side one of my young vibernum bodnantense 'Dawn' is covered in buds, some now opening and the red Witch Hazel (Rubin) is already in flower.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
Hi Martyn. I've often wondered if there are any fellow Manxies on this forum.
I've got quite a few daffodils poking through - but I covered them in compost and told them to come back nearer the time! Not sure if this was right or wrong, but that's what I did.
Are sternbergias normally a problem? I planted some bulbs in mid September and all I have are lots of green leaves. No flowers. Do they take a year or so to settle?
Three snowdrops "Worronnii" out in bloom yesterday in damp and mild Bath, in a sheltered courtyard garden. This seems to be the earliest snowdrop I've got as it was early last year. I must get some more.
HI CHARLEY D no experience with sternbergias but if they are new bulbs like dafs they don't flower first year, as for the compost my thought is that if the bulbs say it's warm enough to grow they will grow through the compost and still flower, you can't hold nature back in the garden but you can in temperature controlled environments
I went round the Olympic Park in London last week, and there were banks of daffodils out in full bloom. And in other London parks too. In my West Midlands garden they are only showing some leaf.

Good heavens, nothing showing yet in Dordogne. Still have some roses out though.

Sternbergia should flower in autumn then get leaves. Mine have been considering the idea for many years.
I expect any daffs I buy to flower the first year Martyn.
I agree they come through when they're ready. Any ideas we have about timing are ignored
