Old floribunda rose

  • Thanks WWimage

All the new and odd growth came through red but now look all the same and there are comparatively few thorns on all the stems when looking at my other roses.

It is the manner of growth I suppose that made me suspicious but one of the longest freakiest stems is coming out of a piece of old wood that has also had the pink double flowers on. I think I'm going to muse on it for a while...

Good to know that about ripping the stems off too- thank youimage

You could try posting this on the gardenweb specialist  rose forums where more expert eyes than mine can take a look. To me, especially since you say the flowers remained the same,  none of that growth looks suckery.  I think by pruning off the deadwood and moving it to a new spot with fresh soil and nutrients, you've probably rejuvenated it.

The longer canes too could well be down to it now being in a better spot - roses are very variable like that.  Are you 100% sure that it's a floribunda?

  • Hi Imw,

Yes, perhaps you're right- I liked it when it was small and covered in flowers thoughimage

I'm not sure it is a floribunda, no, that was just a guess based on its size last year and clusters of smallish flowers...be interesting to see what it does next year...it isn't really growing like a bush rose either (in my inexpert opinionimage)

..from its growth habit - those stems from the base, its foliage, glossy and modern shrub looking, dark green probably gets lighter with age... and its pretty pink flower that you say are double pink when open... and its reddish foliage on the young growth.... sounds a lot like 'Bonica' to me... just a guess, but this one has been around since 1982 and so popular it could be picked up by anyone, anywhere...

    ...see what you think Victoria...

If there's one thing that I'm learning about roses, it's that size is greatly determined by whether the rose likes it where you planted it!

Tea roses, commonly 2-3ft in the uk, easily reach 7+ft shrubs in California where they are happy. Did you have any clearer pictures of the blooms, would help with id, which would also help with pruning advice.

  • Agree Salino, it could be Bonica 82. I have it and it makes lots of stems, and is quite vigorous with masses of blooms. I find it is so good it is best to keep it well controlled, pruning it back to 2-3 feet.

  • I've had a look at Bonica and you could be right- it is a big plant though from what I just read. I don't have any pictures of it looking nice but this is from this year:

Perhaps it decided to grow this year instead of flower and me chopping bits off wouldn't have helped. If it wants to grow that large I might have to shift it again image, there are two HT roses behind it...

aah..that's a shame.... it's not Bonica looking at those.... Bonica is a much lighter pink, with fuller flowers.... like here...  the bud on yours I thought was going to show a lighter coloured rose than the one above....  sorry about that.. we shall have to think again... this is Bonica..

  • Yes, that is a nice dusky pink - I like that rose.

The images on Google seem to vary in colour as they generally do. I think the bud on my top pic was a bit of a red herring - it is an old bud and faded.

It doesn't get any brighter than the bottom pic- I think they lighten with age from what I remember...image

Its a small flower in clusters of around 5...

..yes that's more or less what I do... prune back to about 3 foot, as I like mine to grow to 5 foot by late summer...  it will climb too if encouraged.... but I don't have room for that....

    ..a floriferous beauty, in June...
