    dahlias are great for late summer Vic 14

  • Clay is the lesser of evils. Something in between would be nice.

    Repeat Roses will flower late in year, and love clay.

    Ooh i will get some hostafan. Somebody down the road from me has them in their front garden they are huge image

  • You should grow dahlias, but ask your neighbour, if he has the same soil, and if so, what does he do with them overwinter. Choice is to leave them in, and the cold wet clay may not be great for them, or dig up the tubers after the first frost and store them, replanting in Spring. I am sure he or she will be happy to advise best course for your conditions. I grow loads, but have lightish soil and can leave them in.

    I did buy a dahlia once and didnt realise that i had to lift it. Needless to say it died image but the main thing is that now i know what to do

    again , pluses and minuses. Last house I left all my dahlias in the ground in winter without any problems. Now, on clay, have to lift them all ,over 200 of them. Hey ho, it's all part of the fun.

    vic14  as my dear late mother would have said " self praise has no glory" but I like it.
