I had to remove 2, 2 foot aspen stumps because there were hundreds of runnig coming from it. In the end I hired a guy with a minidigger. Even with that it took 2 hours to get one out and involved cutting through the tap root manually while the stump was lifted. No way it ever would have been dug out manually. Cost £200 but I though it was money well spent
