Fallen leaves on veg beds

Hi folks,

Should I rake up the leaves (mostly willow) that have fallen on my veg beds, of just leave them to rot away? Is there an advantage to having bare soil?

The leaves that fell on the lawn were raked up and bagged to turn into leaf mould.

The beds are empty apart from a few cabbages and onions.

Cheers,

Depends on how many leaves there are, a few can be left, but a thick covering can lead to rotting of any veg left in the bed. I always leave some leaves on my lawn and beds to feed the worms and soil over winter. Leave a few but not loads. Dig some in as well.

  • As Dave Morgan says, leave a few but not a thick layer.  Rake them away from any plants, but leave the rest for the worms to pull down into the soil image

  • A very timely question/answers for me - I'd been wondering the same thing as Tenorbrew. Great advice - although my nearest neighbour is almost a quarter of a mile away so no garden vacs for me.
