Strawberry mystery

Hi, I’m new to gardening and had some problem with strawberries this year. Perhaps someone can explain what happened... I’ve put black weed suppressant fabric around the plants and covered it with bark. The plants were doing really well and had lots of big green strawberries. When I went to the allotment a week later to collect the strawberries there were nearly none left (neither green nor ripened ones). Does anyone knows what might have been the cause of that?

Someone has nicked them or the slugs or birds had them-but if there were no sign of damaged fruit I would suspect the first
