runner beans hestia

Hello everyone! I am thinking about what to grow next year; I came across runner bean hestia seeds in Amazon. Has anyone grown these? I would love some input on how prolific they are and whether they're worth growing. ... Thank you in advance image

Runner bean,  Hestia are a dwarf variety. Too close to the ground for me. The slugs get low down beans, I dont grow dwarf french for the same reason. I use a tent shape frame of bamboo poles and have the runners and french beans up high.

I have grown Hestia and found that they produced a good, tasty crop but not as good as climbing beans. As fidgetbones says they are vulnerable to slugs seeing as some of the quite large beans drape on the ground. Try growing them in containers, for which they are ideal.

  • Thank you fidgetbones and Mel...I just got a few seeds from a friend today for free, I guess I'll try in hanging baskets then image

They are just right for growing in pots, pretty flowers too, but must be kept fed and watered. I'm not sure hanging baskets would be deep enough though.

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
  • I have a wooden table no one's using right now. I'll put the pot in the that then. ... Thanks busy-lizzie image

I have heard that spraying a ring of WD40 around the bottom of your plant pots will deter slugs and snails. Guess you would have to re-apply it after rain though. Might give it a try next year.

  • Thanks Mel, I'll remember the Wd40 image
