Good luck with the traffic if you are heading to the Christmas market thingy at Chatsworth.
Earlier in the year when visited Bakewell there was a sizeable delay on the descent from the Monyash road into Bakewell...road works I understood.I was hoping that would be finished now.
pansyface - Just in case you thought I was some sad individual who roamed around the countryside taking pictures of road signs. It was in fact this beautiful honeysuckle that had taken-up residence at this road junction that was the object of my attention....in this instance, It just fitted the bill inasmuch as it signposted Abbots Bromley.
Lucky you David, my late wife Joan loved Chatsworth, we spent many lovely short breaks there and of course visits to Bakewell where we divided, she loved the tarts I loved the pudding. I lived in a small hidden village called Deighton, a single row either side of a lane, one half called Waller and one half Thompsons. Never went back until last year found the village exactly as I left it only not a Waller or Thompson left, all incomers from the large towns around who had upgraded the cottages and with electricity and drainage instead of oil lamps well water and soil toilets, they are now asking me to do a history of my time there. We do live in an area of hidden villages though never heard of a Horn dance, did once see a strange dance when a cow stood on Tom's foot, the words of the song he sang at the same time must have been in Viking as my tender ears could not make it out.
Nice memories of boating through your area, David... Fradley Junction, Passing huge piles of toilets at Armitage, fish and chips at Rugeley, Plum Pudding Tunnel, criss crossing the river Trent before serenely passing Shugborough Hall, and bursting onto the 'lake' at Tixall Wide and doing big loop-the-loops on my narrowboat!
"What is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbour".
Nice to hear you have pleasant memories of my patch, Will ...I understand your journey well, with 'The Ash Tree' the next favourite stop-off for boats after 'The Plum Pudding' (heading north).
My own personal pleasure is to be living close to 'Cannock Chase'....a place of outstanding natural beauty.
Yes, I've heard you speak fondly of your's & Joan's affection for Chatsworth.
I'm looking forward to my visit because (like you both) I love the place too.
Bakewell is probably better (like most places) enjoyed in the summer. Although, my visit does coincide with market day, which is always worth a look around.

Ah, good! It all seemed a bit chaotic when I was last there.
This visit is purely for Chatsworth House itself and the Christmas theme...I have no prior knowledge of a market on that day.
