the RHS encyclopedias are pretty pricey, but I'm sure they can be found " pre-owned" on Amazon. Maybe your daughter wouldn't want to buy 2nd hand for Christmas, but might be worth a look if you fancied one?? Just a thought.
My copy of 'Dream Plants for the Natural Garden' arrived and I've been devouring it for a couple of days. It's focussed on really tough and trouble free plants for a 'natural' Piet-Oudolf-esque planting. (Although having seen one of his gardens in person, I'm not convinced by his style).
The plant choices are very good and include some more unusual varieties, and, based on Oudolf's experience planting public gardens, are generally trouble free and bone hardy. Slightly more tender or troublesome plants are included in a separate section if they are deemed particularly useful or desirable. (This includes some plants I have always thought of as perfectly hardy - perhaps this reflects the fact that the authors are Dutch, so have to contend with a more continental climate?)
Very good book coming from a different angle to most, practical and and well informed.
"What is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbour".
I'm always looking at "used" books on amazon! I've amassed the entire rhs encyclopaedia collection at around £2.80 per book, most of them are brand new just an older edition
I do the the same Rhod. Sent my son a hint list for Christmas of half a dozen books I really wanted. Emailed the links to Amazon with prices ranging from £0.01 to £2.00 - he told me he ordered the whole lot!
Big selection of gardening and wildlife gardening books to be had for almost nothing, not had one delivered that wasn't in really excellent condition.
Thank you all for your suggestions...... I am looking at them all and have just got to "Dream plants for the natural garden" . I have really appreciated personal recommendations and am enjoying following them all up! And Busy-Lizzie - I now fully understand your comment! Thank you all again.
