Soil - how moist?
In the boggy area alongside the pond, the soil has become very wet especially after all this rain. The pond edge is slightly lower on that side, something I assumed was required in order to keep the soil moist. But I'm starting to wonder if I really needed any excess pond liner going underground there, as the soil is wet to the point of being able to make clay pots if I had a potting wheel.
In September I planted some violets and lady's mantle in that area when the soil was moist but still fairly crumbly but have had to rescue them by replanting in the border. Would it be best to confine plant species to total water living ones? i.e yellow flag or anything with 'water' in front of it? Is there any way of mixing in grit or manure to try and dry it out? But then come next summer it will dry out naturally in a hot spell?

Fishy, I think you need to stick to bog plants, of which there are many, rather than plants for standard borders.

I did Philippa, but then the soil is quite moist in that part of the garden when I come to think of it, especially under the flowering redcurrant. Perhaps I didn't need a liner at all. In fact the whole garden is moist right now.
Thank you punkdoc I will
Pansyface - it was brilliant wasn't it. There was something of 'oh whistle and I'll come to you' about it. I thought Michael Palin played his part very well, he should try serious acting more often.
