Begonia tubers

Just lifted my tuberous begonias and whilst cleaning them of compost ready for storage noticed several new shoots on them. Should I leave them and carry on or rub them off?

  • Leave them on it will help build a stronger plant. If you are slowing your plant down for the winter cool to 45-50 degrees and water very little. Too much water will cause root decay so you can even leave soil dry completely between watering. Keep plant in sunny location and away from extremely cold drafts. If you are going to keep it growing strongly for the winter allow your shoots to start branching but keep them pruned to keep your plant more compact and prevent it from getting too tall. Do not fertilize it either way until early spring when the days get longer.

  • If you do not want to let it grow them keep them in darkness. A sunny location will just invite the begonia to grow. I store mine in my garage and water them slightly if they start to go soft.
