There is a Dahlia nursery next to me. All the stored tubers are just sitting on the ground under the benches of a frost free greenhouse. Nothing will be done to them until next spring when they are boxed up and cuttings taken for the next years plants. Why increase the space you need to store them and risk cut and damaged surfaces at this time of year? Don't see the point.
Well i attempted the 'just pull them apart' method from very large clumps.
With a clump with around 50 tuber i ended up with around 10. the rest were damaged either crushed or ripped from the stem in the 'just pull them apart' method'!
This method did however work a lot better on small very dry clumps.
I gave up trying to spot any eyes and basically just cut them with a chunk of main root/stem attached. There will hopefully be an eye in there somewhere.
As an aside I had several clumps with crown gail that I just binned but hope to replant in the same bed next year (which is now clear). Any tips with treating this bed or shall i just go for it?

It couldn't be any clearer....
I agree if you have a stem a bud is likely to be lurking in there somewhere...
