rhubarb gel

I've been clearing and weeding around my rhubarb crowns ready for mulching at the weekend and all the crowns have a weird clear gel/jelly/goo coming out of it.

I've taken pics but having trouble uploading.

any ideas???

    Too late to eat rhubarb now. Stop cropping at approx. end July.

    thanks everyone, my mind has been settled slightly as I was assuming fungal infection. haven't harvested this year as I only moved the crowns last autumn.
