Thanks Verdun, do they have to go in gh or can they be left out in pots? I only have a tiny (crappy) zip up one and it's very full!"!

  • Hi, hope you don't mind me tacking on a related question. I sowed a load of perenniels (hollyhock, lupin, foxglove, salvia, helianthus, silene) in the summer but didn't manage to clear my new border in time to get them in before first frost. They are currently in 3" pots in a frost-free greenhouse, all looking very healthy (some actually flowering). Don't know what to do now! Keep watering, let them die back, put them outside in sheltered area? Any advice much appreciated.

  • Thank you very much, Verdun. Have about 60 plants, so would hate to lose them!

  • Sounds like you'll have a fantastic show next year if all pull through.  I'm tempted to grow from seed myself but lacking confidence at the moment.  Would be great to see pics next year when they come through

  • First time I've sown perenniels and about 80% success rate. Then some got leggy so I lopped off the tops, stuck those in compost/perlite mix, and they all rooted (which is why I had more than I anticipated). I really want an all-herbaceous border, but it's currently stuffed with rhodis and azaleas. I think I'll move half of them to another part of the garden and fill the gaps with the new plants, and see how that looks.
