Bash your sprout stalks with a hammer Artjak - they'll split and then bash them a bit more and put them in the compost bin, they'll break down much quicker then.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
Can I add a very very important job that needs to be done ,I had 3 compost bins doing fab then I spotted a grey roland (rat) who decided to take up residence in my compost bins, did not realize that rats can burrow under ground , So now Please make sure that you put very strong wire with a very small mesh under you compost bins or you may have unwanted guests,. A rat can go thro a hole the size of a 50p piece.
If you want to keep rats out you need galvanised weld mesh with a gauge of at least 16g with holes 1/2" x 1/2". They will chew through anything lighter.
If you're troubled with rats in your compost bin do not put anything cooked in your bin and absolutely no potatoes or potato peelings (cooked or raw) into your bin. My brother is a potato farmer - he says rats will chew through concrete to get at potatoes!

I leave an old kitchen knife on my compost bins to chop everything up nice and small. When i meet a bit of plant not decomposed in the finished compost I just throw it back into the first bin and let it go through the process again.
Warning all--- you may find my suggestion disgusting. The only accelerant I use on the compost heap is urea, very easily obtained in human urine and is in constant supply. It may even deter rats?

Actually, oldtimer, I think you'll find that a lot of us use recycled beer and wine in this way.
Even recycled tea and coffee the same way.
I encourage all males of the household to water the compost heap rather than traipsing muddy feet up stairs.
Dove, I shall certainly be working off my aggression on sprout stalks
