    Stanley,

One area people tend to forget in their preparation. From the underside run something up through the stumps of the old stems. something like a sharp pointed knitting needle. That will core out any fleshy material that may be lurking. Do this a week after you've lifted them. And then once again store them for a week to dry out.

Once they've dried out trim off the old roots. And store them upside down for the winter.

Place them in a seed and bury the tubar 2/3 down in to general purpose compost. moisten, not soak the compost. And place on a warm windowsill.

when the shoots sprought and are established. Carefully slice them off, making sure you take a thin slither of the old tubar with it. And then plant up in to pots

Hi Hms, as musher says bury the tuber shallowly in a pot or tray, when it shoots away you can take the cuttings. What I would add is that you don't do this until spring ie late March if like me you have only a cold greenhouse or window sills. Sorry if you already knew the timings. Currently my dahlias are still flowering well and I won't start lifting the tubers for storing until November, roll on the Spring.

I'm clearing out tomatoes from the polytunnel to make room for mine.

Not looking forward to lifting them all and I really should make sure they're all labelled before the first frost.

So much for winding down in Autumn eh?

Mine are still flowering at the moment, even my potted balls, north south and east facing. Even so I'm leaving all but the potted ones in the ground this year. I seem to have the same sucess rate if I dig them as leave them (actually bigger earlier if left). I will protect them though.
