Can I force 'un-prepared' bulbs in vases in the dark?

Well, you can grow them in pots as you would prepared bulbs, but they won't flower until spring. They need a period of chilling so that they think they've had a winter and the spring has arrived - without that they won't actually be 'forced' - that's what prepared bulbs are - they are bulbs that have been chilled. But I don't know for how long ........

I should think the cold is more relevant than the dark. Without human intervention bulbs are always in the dark. It's the cold that varies

Thank you Dovefromabove and nutcutlet. I shall simply plant the bulbs in compost, and keep them cold and enjoy them when they decide to bloom for me! Meanwhile, I'll try to find some 'prepared' bulbs to put in my lovely hyacinth vases.
