Hi pansyface, three quarters of plot is covered. Just spent last three weeks on the other quarter , with a bad case of bineweed and dandilion. Hope to start planting veg in spring.

I cover the veggie garden with manure in the winter and rotovate it in in the spring. They say carrots will fork, but mine didn't mind, their bit was manured with the rest of it.

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

hello roy. Hope the new allotment goes well. i tend to whack on manure in winter so as to allow it to break down in the cold.  I give it a good dig over again in spring, and put a bit more on. My philosophy is that you ca never have too much poop!

  • Glad you asked the question. I haven't been sure. However I disagree with Tootles - I've put some manure on the garden and now the neighbour's cat is busy pooping on it.  Too much poop!

Don't rotavate any ground that has perennial weeds in it

  • lay a couple of layers of corrugated cardboard down first and then put as much manure as possible on top, this helps kill the majority of weeds (annual or otherwise), the cardboard will be gone by spring - just remember to take any sticky tape or staples out of it first.

most big white goods stores will have loads of cardboard they're willing to give away (so the don't have to get charged by waste companies)
