garrya elliptica dying? Help!

my mothers garrya elliptica (which she calls a Gary Lineker 
) has suddenly started dying, its established (planted 5 years ago) and up until mid august was growing well, then suddenly started dying back. I cut the stem of one of the dying limbs off and the wood inside had a dark brown stain in the heartwood (but the sapwood was still aright)
anyone have any ideas? my first inclination is to take it to the ground and hope it regrows next year?

bit of pruning next summer will be in order.....if it survives the winter.
