i am leaving my dahlias until the first serve frost so i can enjoy them as long as possible . we had a few frosts here already but it not killed any of my dahlias or summer bedding plants. i been really lazy with my dahlias not dead heading and keeping them tidy thinking the frost would of got them by now.
Last year i lifted them earlier without frost blacking them and have had no problems with them this year.
We are told to let the frost hit them before you dig them but I don't know why so I ignore that advice and dig mine in September when its still warm outside.I have always dug my bulbs/tubers ect early and have never had problems.
Can some one please tell me what the frost is supposed to do for them.
I lifted mine yesterday after the frost. Surprising how much the tuber can grow in one season. I grow some dwarf dahlias from seed, the tubers are nearly the size of my hand.
Good afternoon everyone I can see post from a few people who keep dahlia,s I for one have got just under 100 dahlia,s and too keep them in good order I lift them up with the first frost turn them upside down for a few days to dry them off remove has much has you can of them ie soil dust them with sulphium and then store them in the green house once stored away nicely you can then put over them a blanket of fleece to keep them dry no rot will set in once spring comes you can then devide them up then pot them on to put out in June

Mine are all blackened today so I will lift them at the weekend and let them dry out in my greenhouse before storing them in my shed.

Send them into dormancy.
Charlie the minute I dig them and cut the stem off they go dormant because they are not receiving any more nourishment.
Have to agree with Bill, as long as the tubers are big enough and dried out properly they will be fine.
Beautiful colours there too, I might have to venture away from the single-flowered types somewhat next year.
