Amarillis

I have owned an amaryllis about 7 years old, now approx. 20cm diameter. for the first time its leaves are dying. it has had 2 flower stems with 5 flowers on each for the past 2 years, is just having a rest? i have just repotted it, but have never fed it, as the original instruction said not to feed, just put in sunny warm place (in my conservatory).  So far this has been very successful!

It may well be Jill, or it's just giving up the ghost, everything has a shelf life.

I now have a small collection of what we call Maryalices. Mine have all been allowed to die back since I stopped watering in September, they get cut back to the top of the bulb round about now and kept in the garage until Jan/Feb in their pots. I restart them by bringing into the house and watering them. Occasionally I repot them into fresh compost a mix of John Inness 2 and general purpose. They are fed, once growing with a tomato feed, this I continue to do until September.

i reckon yours is just following the normal process although I know some folk do keep them going all year. I'd suggest you just let it have a rest dry in the cool  until early spring..good luck.

If you have just repotted it the bulb may not need feeding at the moment, but 7 years is a very long time to go without a feed.
  • Hi Welshonion,

I agree about the feeding, but that was the instructions when the plant was purchased-- do not feed!. I therefore assumed it received all the required food from rain water plus lots of sun, which it has had.  It has grown happily, up to now, from a 5cm diameter bulb to its present size (20cm), flowering every late spring/summer. So I will just  give it a rest over the winter and hope it  sprouts again in the Spring!

  • Here in Canada when winter starts our potted Amaryillis is laid on its side to dry out and take a rest, then in the early spring half the soil is removed from the top portion of the pot and replace with fresh soil and I do fertilize once a month while growing.

  • I know its a bit late, but I just thought you might be interested. The 7/8 year old amaryllis I asked about last year, was obviously just taking a break! After 2/3 months, having lost all of its leaves, it return to strong growth, many leaves, and finally produced 3 flower stems with a total of 16 flowers! It is a shame This site refuses to upload my photos, as I could have sent one to you!

I guess its a case of "never give up" !

  • I am computer literate! I have followed the instructions to the letter, many times. I noted that in one of the discussions on this site there is an admission that they are having problems with uploading photos, so it is not my problem but theirs!

As for the amaryllis, she produces at least 2 or 3 baby bulbs per annum, which I repot and which themselves flower after a couple of years. I look forward to being able post a photo!

  • Have found the answer in Talkback! The site has a glitch, but EDD had the remedy! So here is a photo of my Amaryllis and one of her 'babies'. Impossible to photo in the round, but honestly each of the 3 stalks had 5 flowers ( 15 not 16 altogether!)
