Carrots should be sown directly where they're going to grow. They don't transplant. They also need soil temps (as opposed to air temps) around 15C to give the seeds a good chance to germinate.

    There may be another way...http://www.telegraph.co.uk/gardening/3340762/Goodbye-seed-trays-hello-gutter.html.

I tried this last year, with good results, and have sown some more seeds (peas, spring onions and carrots) in lengths of guttering in the greenhouse. The spring onions and peas are well up, the carrots are just starting to poke through.

I'm planning to cloche the planting areas to warm up the soil a bit.

image figrat. Just read the link. Sounds a good plan to use guttering.image

I'm just trying to work out my planting plan for this year and want to grow some winter veg to replace veg grown in the summer - I've only turnip on the list so far which can be sown as late as July, would you think they'd be ok sown in guttering. Me thinks turnip could be planted after garlic is harvested.

You can start loads of things now, just visit a garden centre and check the seed packets. We're probably about a month (at the worst) away from the last threat of frost and any seedlings can be grown and potted on in that time providing you have somewhere (like a windowsill for seedlings then to a cold frame outside) to keep young plants at night.

Because of the cold spring we've had I'm only properly starting to sow now.
