I've tried several varieties of carrot and to be honest they've all been pretty good. I think home grown carrots raised in good soil, not pumped full of water, and eaten fresh, are always much tastier than bought ones.   This year I am trying Tendersweet which are supposed to be very good for flavour. Autumn King can be a bit slow to sweeten up, so unless you particularly want a later crop I wouldn't recommend them.

I make a fence out of fleece around my carrot patch - so far no carrot fly, but maybe we don't have them around here anyway?

Interested in different varieites - I have grown Autumn King which I like, and Nantes 5 (different to Early Nantes I beleive, but should be earlier than AK?) which I found really bland, so at the moment I'm concentrating on Autumn King. I have been surprised to note that the Autumn King were first to germinate this year, although only just beginning to show real leaves they are well ahead of Nantes 5 of which very few have appeared yet. I may have to try some Tendersweet next year.
