Pruning

Sizeyuk1Sizeyuk1 Posts: 125

Should I prune my standard rose Golden Wedding, its been in the ground for about 4 months and has had lots of roses on it and is in flower at the moment.  Also when do I prune a Camellia as its out of shape  because it used to be hidden behind a conifer and  has done its best to grow towards the light, its full of buds at the moment, is it next spring when I can prune it and  how much, is it the same principle as for other bushes.

I'd leave the rose till spring, just make sure it's staked against any wind we have this winter. As for the camellia, they are pruned after flowering. Camellia can take a hard prune, but you pay the price with fewer flowers the following spring. If it's competeing against a conifer, I'd consider removing the conifer, if practicable.

Thanks Dave,  we did remove the conifer last year and it did better than before. Its just long and leggy through trying to get some light. I will give it a light prune after flowering. I will leave the rose until spring.

If you want to reshape the camellia next year, then do the hard prune after flowering. They take a few years to get back to the best flowering, but with some tlc,the can be reformed into something gorgeous. Hard pruning them is just the same as any shrub, cutting back to outward facing buds and the feeding and mulching. It can take a few years as I said, but I've done it and the results are well worth it.
