Winter Readings

Can anyone recommend some good books about Gardening / Gardens for reading over the winter?

I have already decided to treat myself to 'The Ivington Diaries' by Monty Don as I like the idea of it being in diary form stretched over many years.
I already have his 'Gardening at Longmeadow' book along with Alan T's 'Secret Garden', Chris Beardshaw's 'How Does Your Garden Grow', RHS Flower Show and a few more such as the 'Expert' series and similar.

I just thought I'd ask what any of you would recommend or are planning on reading yourselves?

Improving Your Soil: A Practical Guide to Soil Management for the Serious Home Gardener
    Keith Reid

I am awaiting delivery of this so cant say if its any good yet

Hopefully it will give me greater understanding of our greatest ally...the soil.....and give me a source of reference for any questions I get on the allotment here in Brizzle

Carol Klein's 'Grow your own Garden'.  Alan Titchmarsh's 'The Gardener's Year' are always ones I dip into.  Not a book but there is a DVD of Geoff Hamilton's BBC series currently available on Amazon.

  • Sounds rather interesting NewBoy2  image

  • Ooh thanks for that info LeskleyK - Geoff Hamilton was such a manageable gardener and missed by so many of us.  I have the original videos but sadly no longer have a video player - may have to uopgrade to the DVD.

One of the best sources of Lottie Info is to listen to the oldest most miserable but most sucessful gardener you know

If their plot is full up most of the seasons and it taste good they probabley know what they are doing.................unfortunately the one I have is very technical

Hes/shes miserable because they are always getting asked for their "secrets" !!

  • im always getting given advice on my plot- sadly usually the exact same words from the exact same person- "this plot won plot of the year 11 or 12 times in a row, you know"

My plot is behind Horfield Prison and I suffered in my first three weeks of getting my plot with " Now what you need to do here is....." and " I usually do this "

Havent seen them since as I won Best Newcomer in 2012  image

You cant pick your family but you can pick your friends and Lottie advisers !!!

Find the nearest allotments and stroll down and ask if you can help any of the older Allotmenteers with their digging or there may be some other ways you can help

You will then have  an allotment

Its good to help people............young un !!
