Lobelia Cardinalis

A lobelia cardinalis 'Queen Victoria' has a huge chunk taken out of it at the base of the stem. And its in a basket in the pond?? The offender must have used the devil's bit scabious to cross over image

  • What a bummer Fishy. Will it live? My last one was gnawed to death in the ground and I was hoping the new one would be safe in the pondimage

It might live Victoria, I think if you make sure there's no 'bridge' at any time. But then a hard frost can kill them I hear image

The lobelia Verdun. Isn't it a bit strange though that a plant native to North America isn't tougher? The winters there can be brutal. I'll have to put them in the shed next to the window. I'm assuming they need keeping damp through the winter?

  • I'll take mine out as well then - thanks Verdunimage

Its the first time I've seen the garden in the daylight since last Sunday and I see my QV has a bite out the main stem tooimage

I didn't think they were particularly hardy either although a garden a few doors away from me has one in the front garden. Not sure how long it's been there and last winter was mild. I'll see if it survives the cold wet ground it's in this winter. image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
