Morning image I dont know how big or old your maple (acer?) is  snowathlete, I have mine in a pot and when I potted it on it seemed to be all root ball, no long tap root, which was about 18cm deep and across.

If possible try digging around it after you have cut it down, then cut into the part under soil level.

Quite a job so good luck image you'll certainly increase the size of the bed.

Has anyone heard of planting rows on the north/south axis to gain maximum sunlight?image Hmm, sounds logical.

Snowy, do you have flower borders ,?

    If so.........

I was wondering if you could grow any of your veg amongst  your flowers as in a original cottage garden style,  all so I wonder if you had some largish  containers like again the cottage gardeners used dolly tubs, the old aluminium cold water tanks etc for veg.like an extension of the veg patch.it can look very attractive . The plant pots you can buy even the large plastic ones may work , but if you can pick any up from ie.. the freecycle ?

Bob flowerdew used things like old wheelbarrows and tyres stacked up for depth.image

  • Thanks green magpie, fortunately no really bad weeds to worry about.

I think climbing beans up the fence is the best idea, a good use of space.

problem with onion sets is they're expensive for what they are, compared to the cost of grown onions in the shops. And I already have seed.

Everyone says charlottes are good and I know they taste nice, so I'll definitely be getting some. Thanks.

BB, the maple is 6 or 7 years old. Was 15-20cm when I bought it. Time flies. I read that putting a bucket over the stump will help ensure it doesn't resprout. So if I can't get it out I'll try that and then should be easier to take out dead in the spring. Will probably go cut it down in a minute and save the leaves for making leaf mold!

good thought about planting north-south, maybe I should do that.

grandma, I don't have any flower borders I can use, no. but I do have several large containers (some nicer than others) including a great one someone kindly gave me from freecycle. Love that site!
