Nope. My soil is very fertile alkaline loam on a clay subsoil.   Some well drained, some moist, some in full sun and some in shade.

Vendée - 20kms from Atlantic coast.

My soil is a very fertile (ex pig farm) silt with areas of high lime content because of the lime mortar from old houses and other parts with very acid soil. The Anemone grows equally viciously in all types.

I would feel guilty if I did not warn people of a plants propensities and then had them come back on here and complain about an invasion.

There are a few cultivars of the Pink Japanese Anemone.

I'm guessing some are more well behaved than others.

I have a white one called Andrea Atkinson, its perfectly well behaved.

Mine are well behaved as well - absolutely no trouble.  Heavy clay soil and one clump in full shade and the other in sun.imageimage

My friend who lives about three miles away from me, has these as an invasive weed  for may years - she has given me dozens of bagsfuls, and I have just about got them to take!  Who knows the reason why they will run in one garden and ignore anther - bit like lily of the valley for that.

Berghill - you're absolutely right to warn people.

Plants are mysterious things.  I can't grow Chinese Lanterns but Honesty self seeds happily in beds and paths.   Friends on 2.5 acres of heavy acid clay grow Chinese Lanterns like cress but can only get Honesty to grow in one small spot.

  • I too have the pink one growing in about 5 different spots in my garden. I've given some (with a warning) to a friend but I'm going to get rid of lots of it after it's done flowering. I'm not sure how quickly it's spread as I think previous homeowners just let it be. All the clumps bar one are fairly small.
