Planting trees and shrubs - what help do I need to give?

Hello

I'm a little confused with what I need to give a young tree or shrub to set it on its way.

Do I mix in compost to the soil first? Then would I add rootgrow to the roots, then bonemeal as planting in?

Or is this going a bit overboard?

The soil looks pretty good already. It's got some clay in but it's in good condition. Doesn't seem to get waterlogged.

The plants in question are:-

Young tree (2m) crab apple

3l pot viburnum and hydrangea

Beech hedging - bare root 40cm high

Plus some young lavender and crocus bulbs.

Thanks!

Get six gardeners and you get six different ways, usually all work as the gardeners on here have the experience. When I first moved in here 30 years ago to a bare lawn and not too much time a lot of Shrubs got a hole dug, the bottom loosened with a fork, some grit in the base and then planted with the original soil, they are still going strong apart from the Lavender. You usually get eight to ten years from Lavender depends on how you dress or prune it. I say dress because after flowering you cut back but never into old wood, it will not re-grow. in time it outgrows itself I take cuttings and renew after five six years and some goes in pots. You want well draining soil for lavender so add plenty of grit, they do not need extra goodness though a bit of compost if you have it will not go adrift, I had none to start with now have two large boxes, one to fill and one to empty after it is rotted down.

So if you have it use it, if not they will still grow if well watered for the first couple of weeks, water is more important than all else you do and good luck.

    Frank.
