Tulips

I had beautiful tulips for the first time in a pot last spring. They were left in a corner, forgotten and I would like to know if I just leave them and do nothing will they bloom again or should I lift them and re-plant in fresh compost?

Did you feed them before they died down? If not they would have needed it. If they've just been left they will come again, but the display may not be as good as last year. Ideally tulips should be lifted after dying down and replanting in November. You can lift them and replant in fresh compost, any nutrients in the compost will have been used up by now. It's probably the best chance for a semi decent display, you've nothing to lose.

I generally leave them one season, if they're decent in season 2 , they can stay, if not dig them up and chuck them into the compost bin.

I try and keep pot grown tulip bulbs from one season to the next. I feed with Tomato fertiliser once they are well grown  and if I've enough time and energy I lift and store over summer. That said I've a couple of big pots and I have left them for two years now next spring will be the third so it's fingers crossed. If I was you I'd gently tip them out and sort them,, they may have split into small bulbs which won't flower next year. If they look ok replant them into fresh compost. Many DIY stores and online companies sell off bulbs half price at this time of year so keep your eyes open for a bargain.

I think I will take a look at them and if they look viable will replant them and remember for these and future bulbs to actually take the time to look after them properly next year! Thank you for the replies. Much appreciated.
