Hedge problem
Hello I'm new to the forum and wondered if anyone can help. We noticed a brown patch on our Leylandii hedge earlier in the year, but it's getting bigger and some more patches have appeared. We thought it may have been caused by aphids, but we can't see any black mould which I've read can be a sign of aphid infestation.
Has anyone else had this problem, and what was the outcome? We don't want to lose our hedge as it gives us privacy and is a good windbreak.

It could be wind burn, conifers can be prone to this. I fear that the brown areas won't recover. It could also be caused by cutting it back too hard.
Someone else may have more positive news for you.
It can happen with leylandii, as artjak say's wind burn, or aphids are the causes. It's been a good year for aphids, and sooty mould doesn't always stay on the branches. Unfortunately it won't recover.
I've noticed a few patches myself on our hedge the past month too.
Our Landlord or the birdies won't be happy if it dies
Thanks to everyone for their replies. We'll give it a good bashing Mike, spray it in Spring and hope for the best.
That's interesting. So is it possible to rescue a leylandi hedge that has gone brown in large areas?
We've had a lot of trouble with leylandi hedging on the IOM this year. Two school of thoughts ... (1) It's caused by all the wind we had and salt in the wind (as we live on an island) caused the damage or (2) there is some sort of disease that has destroyed so many hedges of this type this year.
Ok, thanks Mike
