Asparagus V Horsetail
Hi all. I took on an allotment in June that has some horsetail. I want to plant some asparagus crowns and have earmarked an area suitable. It is currently covered in cardboard and is the last area that needs digging and weeding. I am sure the surface weeds will have died back, but the rhyzomes of the horsetail will still be deep underground & no matter how deep i try to dig them out, they will still lurk under the soil.
Having done as much weeding etc, possible, My thinking is, that if I dig the trench for the crowns, and install a layer of cardboard on the bottom and then the manure/soil mound put on top , would this be ok and sufficient in drainage etc for the asparagus + prevent the horsetail coming through? Alternatively, should I just use black plastic around the plants as they come through in Spring? Any other suggestions would be very welcome

Horsetail can grow through tarmac, so cardboard won't stop it
The only way not to have Mares tail is move allotments. It's gone from my front garden under the house to the back garden. I can't share plants with friends as I would not wish it on them!
