Has anyone grown Cornutas AKA(horned pansy )

It took me a while to find named sorts but they really do flower well are hardy down to at least minus 17F and have a delicate perfume. They come in many single or bi-ooloured and are easily divided in the spring.

Look good with roses in a border. Disease free.

Be interested if anyone else has ever grown them .

I grow Viola cornuta in white and a mauvy colour. I've never picked up the scent, I'll investigate next season. They're the only violas I grow.

    In the sticks near Peterborough
  • If you like scent then the violetta's sometimes available at garden centres. Named ones for example Rebbeca are even stronger.

Viola cornuta minor alba is a seed weed in this garden. I spend my life pulling it out of the paths. Shame as it is a nice little plant. Did grow one with speckled pale blue flowers, but the snails kept on eating it to nothing so it eventually gave up.

  • These sell at over £3 per small plant in specialist supplier as as per website above.

I have to agree that some of these types can be somewhat invasive but what a welcome treat.

..I wish mine was invasive.  It's just dropped dead on me...

  • These plants seem to do better on acid soils and never in very dry places(in heat of summer) in my experience.

They come from mountains in Europe.

  • I have just posted a picture of a cornuta that I have been lucky enough to have as a self seeder, on  floristpansyviola.wordpress. I am  just waiting for a reader to suggest a name to reflect its attributes.
