Talkback: How to make a strawberry bed

in Talkback
I have an area under a Pear Tree which I have cleared of various Ivy Runners. Is it possible to prepare the area for Strawberry growth? I fear the dreaded runners will re-appear under any prep work I may carry out. Incidently having moved and taken over a smallish garden I have 20 hanging baskets with Strawberry Plants.

Strawberries should be grown in good light and not under shady trees. The area under fruit trees is supposed to be kept clear of vegetation
It's probably not ideal for strawberries, which fruit best in sun, but alpine strawberries (Fragaria vesca) would probably thrive!
My 2problems with strawberries last year was that I only got 3 - 5 at a time (not enough to do anything with really plus the abundance of snails made me feel quite disappointed really. I thought perhaps it might be better to grow them in hanging baskets this year, do you think so?
Hi, Linda, Welcome to the threads...
One plant will only produce 3-5 strawberries. More plants will produce a bigger abundance of strawberries and different varieties produce a crop of strawberries over a longer period of time.
There are varieties which allow for a crop between June and August. I had one variety which cropped twice this yr, in June and then did another show in September.
Bringing plants into your GH at this time of yr will provide you with strawberries in time for Wimbledom.
Strawberries grow well in the ground but snails can be a problem and there are options, you could consider a snail repelent. Blue pellets are very effective but there are organic pellets which would proterct your strawberries from slugs and snails.
Hope this is helpful...
